The year 2020 surprised us in the most unexpected way and turned our lives upside down in a blink of an eye. Most of our scheduled or planned activities were postponed or canceled. The spread of COVID-19 had completely transformed our daily lives in one way or another.
With the goal of understanding the experiences and challenges of ECRs in Earth sciences, the Young Earth System Scientists (YESS) Community launched a survey between April and June where ECRs were able to share their experiences, both professional and personal, during the current global crisis.
After a careful analysis of the 197 responses received, this report summarized the common challenges ECRs are facing and made recommendations on how to build a supportive environment that facilitates sustainable development for ECRs in the post-pandemic world. Although the report focuses on ECRs, it is also relevant to the broad scientific community.
We are thankful to the 197 Early Career Researchers who participated in this survey. We extend our sincere gratitude to the YESS community, especially the Executive Committee, Regional Representatives, and members of the Working Groups for bringing out the idea of this survey of ECRs in the unprecedented crisis, analysis of the responses and presentation.
